EGO-LAYING CONTESTS.

THE QUESTION OF WEIGHT.

AUCKLAND RULE CRITICISED [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday. At a meeting of the New Zealand Utility Poultry Club the secretary of the Auckland Poultry-Keepers' Association forwarded a copy of the rules for egglaying competitions adopted by that association.

ilr. J. H. Shaw moved: "That the New Zealand Utility Poultry Club sincerely regrets that it cannot accept the Auckland Poultry-Keepers' Association's proposal in respect to freight of eggs to be laid by fowls entered in egg-Jaying competitions." Mr. Shaw stated that Southland had adopted the two-ounce standard, and at tlie National Utility I Poultry Breeders' Association Conference it was resolved that the standard weight of eggs should be two ounces and strictly enforced in all egg-laying competitions, this standard to be attained not later than August 15 in every year. ! Mr. J. B. Merrett regretted what he described as the retrogressive step taken by the Auckland Association in trying to lower the standard weight of eggs. All over the world the two-ounce standard was accepted. It was absurd to lower the standard for instance for White Leghorns below 24 ounces per dozen when heavy breeds like tho Black Orpingtons could average from 26 to 28 ounces. Certain breeders who had not good stock were behind tho movement, which would do untold evil to the poultry industry in New Zealand.

Mr. SHw's motion was carried unanimously. Mr. Merrett gtm notice of motion to revoke at a special meeting the present rule governing the egg-laying competition and to reimpose the 24-ounoe standard.
