AUSTRALIAN DEADLOCK.
GOVERNMENTS IN CONFLICT.

The New South Wales Government has been in trouble for some time past over three of t'ho I.W.W. prisoners, who were among those sentenced during the war for conspiracy, and whom the Government how desires to deport to England. Late last year tho Premier of New South Wales made urgent representations to the Federal authorities for passports for these men, and arrangements had so far proceeded that berths wero bpoked for tho men on an outgoing steamer before the Minister for Home and Territories issued an instruction that the passports must not be granted. The Federal Minister explained his attitude on the ground that it would be unfair to "unload" Australia's undesirables on England, and said he would resent it very keenly, and take appropriate action if England treated Australja in such a way. Ho also stated that there was an understanding between the two countries i that no such practices should be countenanced. The question has now assumed the importance of a matter of policy, and steps are being taken by the New South Wales Premier to place a formal request for passI ports before the Federal Cabinet,
