CONTESTS IN MELBOURNE.

CYCLING AND SPRINTING. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE. J»n. 8. The visiting South African athletes competed in nicht eyeliner events on Saturday. In the half-mile, Thursfield (South Africa) defeated Brown (Victoria) by a lensih in 655. In the cpiarter-raile, Thursfield defeated Brown by a length in 31 4-Ss. In the mile, Brown beat Thursfield by a wheel in 2m 28 2-ss. The five-mile international scratch race resulted : Brown 1, Ramsden 2, Vandersluys (South Africa) 3. Won by half a length. Time, 12m 14 2-ss. In the 300vds flag race South Africa defeated Victoria. Great interest was taken in a series of sprint challenge events arranged by the Amateur Athletic Association between the visiting South African athletes and Victorian cracks. The contests were very keen. The 100 yards resulted: Oosterlaak (Transvaal) 1, Gale (Victoria) 2, Kinsman (South Africa) 3. It was the first appearance in Australia, and he is still suffering slightly from a strained tendon. The winner took charge at 50 yards, and won by two yards, with inches between the second and third. Time, 10 l-10s. The 300 yds resulted: Gale 1, Oosterlaak 2, Bunning (Victoria) 3. The 440 yds relay race resulted: South Africa 1, New South Wales 2, Victoria 3. The Springboks showed themselves past-masters in changes over, and made up yards. They won by three yards in lm 44 4-ss. Victorians were disqualified for crossing over.
