SPARE ROD, SAVE CHILD.
DOCTOR OPPOSES THRASHING. Has an angry father a right to administer the rod to an erring child? The French League for Moral Hygiene, headed bv Dr. Toulouse, a famous physician, says "No," and is preparing to appeal to the Chamber of Deputies for a revision of the law which gives a, parent the right to direct by the use of force the conduct of lus chiid. The French law provides that a father can ask for the detention of his minor children in gaol if the offence is of a serious nature, but the League for Moral Hygiene asserts that even a correctional school is injurious to a youth's prospects, a? contact there with more serious criminal instincts is inevitable. Regarding the cutting of a stout branch for application to sensitive parts of a child's anatomy, Dr. Toulouse contends that such " persecution" has a negative effect and is likeJy to drive children from home, while ho'holds it is certain to develop hatred in a family circle. ; It may be added, however, that Dr. [Toulouse has no children.
