DEFENCE ECONOMICS.

THE DUNTROON CADETS. NO ROOM ON THE STAFF. [BT TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday. The Defence Department has notified eight cadets who graduated -at Duntroon Military College that commissions cannot be given to them in the New Zealand forces, but that applications aro invited for sis commissions in the British and Indian Armies. The need for retrenchment is the reason given. It was intended to train ten cadets each year but there is only one candidate at present, probably owing to uncertainty as to the future. The department is understood to be contemplating a further reduction in the number of officers employed, additional to those already retrenched.
