FIJI'S FINANCES.
CONSIDERABLE DECREASE. DEFICIT ON NINE MONTHS. [from od r own correspondent.] SUVA, Deo. 22. The colonywis not in the happy flourishing condition it was three years ago. Since that period Fiji has incurred many " extraordinary " financial liabilities which to-day have resulted in a colony which boasted of being very lightly taxed being now in the grip of nearly as heavy taxation as bcr larger neighbours. In spite of the new taxation, and thereby a much larger revenue, the first nine months of the year show a deficit of £140.'220. The revenue for the pcnod was £447.060, as against £349,528 in LD2O. The customs produced £194. 7 i4 (a decrease of £14,521); port duties, etc., £10,315; native taxes, £13/166; hecr-ses, excise, etc., £167,335; fees of court, etc., £34,063; post office, £15,789. The expenditure junipeiJ £180,000 from £409.868 to £590.280. Of this £78,216 was spent on Indian repatriation.
