CHRISTCHURCH BURGLARIES
ARREST OF A SU9PEGT. STRUGGLE WITH CONSTABLE During the last two or three weeks frequent complaints have been made to the police officials of house-breaking and burglaries in the suburbs during the afternoon or early in the evening, says a Christ-church paper. The districts from which most of the complaints emanated were Merivale, Fendalton, Papanua, and St. Albans. From 20 to 30 such complaints were made to the police, the bur glar showing a preference for money and jewellery, the value of which is estimated at some hundreds of pounds. In their search for a clue, the detectives had the, assistance of Constable Studholme, of St. Albans, who, at about 2 p.m. on Tuesday, got on the track of a man near Holly Road, who was suspected of being concerned in the burglaries. He got into communication with the central police station, and Detective-Sergeant Quartermain, accompanied by Detectives Bickerdike, Sheehan, and Le Sueur, went to his assistance. Meanwhile the constable had sighted his quarry, who, becoming suspicious of the former's presence, bolted for safety, the constable mounting his bicycle and giving chase> On being over-' taken the man turned round, and, taking off his coat, showed fight. The constable, however, grappled with him, and after a struggle handcuffed him. On being taken to the detective office, the man gave his name as Charles Campbell Dawkins, and his age as 25 years. He stated that he came from the North Island, and had only been in Christchurch for a few weeks.
