PLANT FOR MANGAHAO.

THE SUCCESSFUL TENDERS. DELIVERY IN 15 MONTHS, It has already been stated that tenders for the supply of about £100,000 worth of plant for the Mangahao hydro-electric works have been accepted by the Gov. frnment, and the successful tenderer in each case is a British firm. Details now available show that seven 4000 k.v.a. transformers of British manufacture are to be purchased from A. D. Riley and Co. at a cost of £16,574; three 0450 b.h-p. (brake horse-power), and two 3250 b.h.p. water- wheels from Boving and Co., at a cost of £23,795; and threo 6000 k.v.a. and two 3000 k.v.a. generators from the Metropolitan Vickers Company, at a cost of £54,1)68. There were 11 tenderers for the first contract, 12 for the second, and eight for the third. The plant mentioned is the bulk of the power-house machinery for Mangahao. It; is all to be delivered within the next 15 months. Its receipt, as arranged, within this period will fit m with the announced intention of the Minister for Public Works to have the Mangahao sourcp of supply completed, ii possible, by the end of 1923. Anions the tenderers were American and Swedish firms. The Government's '< choice of British manufacturers, in the! face of the great experience which the j Americans and the Swedes have had in i the development of hydro-electric power, j may be taken as a sirong expression of | faith in the quality of British work- j ma/ship. The plant referred to above is not all that the Government invited tenders for. I Tenders for other machinery are still un-' der consideration. The accepted tenders '■ were approved by the Cabinet at a special. meeting during the past week-end.
