INTER- COLLEGE GAMES.
REPLY TO CRITICISM. The remarks of the masters of a Southern college with regard to inter college games, made following the playing of matches for the Moascar Cup, were referred to by Mr. J. W. Tibbs, headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School, at the annual prize-giving ceremony last evening-
Mr. Tibbs said the boys were accused of " playing to the gallery." "I have read again Vachel's description'in 'The Hill' of the Et6n and Harrow match, with a view to discover where a match between two New Zealand secondary *cho6ls fails to reach the high ideal of English public school sport,' said Mr. Tibbß. I find there' the same nervous tension In players and spectators, the same keenness in both for the success of their own side, the same display of col-. l<se colours, the same 'old boy' barrackers, not always quite generous to the other side—(laughter)>r-the same * boys, with the same chivalrous applause for' a pieqe of good play by opponents, and angry condemnation oi bad form in. a member of their own team—one thine only I miss, 1 the invitation to the headmaster to lunch on the duke's four-in. hand." (Laughter.) The speaker said that the New Zealand Rugby Union t was blamed for "overriding school sport." Thin seemed to him ti most unjust charge. The union had managed the Moascar Cup competition with the greatest possible consideration for the work of the schools, and with the object of giving the whole Dominion a sample of what clean sport should be.
