ART GALLERY AND MUSEUM
PROPOSED AMALGAMATION.
The proposal to amalgamate the Auckland Art Gallery with the new War Memorial Museum to be erected in the Domain has been considered by Misfl E. Melville, chairman of the City Council Library Committee, and the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, in his capacity as chairman of the Citizens' War Memorial Committee. They submitted a joint report on the matter to the council last evening. • The report stated that the War Memorial Committee was prepared to favourably consider the proposal. Further, the chairman of the council of the Auckland Institute and Museum was'prepared to bring the question before that body. Until Hie museum plans were received and tlie winning design known, however, it would bo impracticable to go into details or draft, for consideration, a suitable scheme for the amalgamatiou of these two important interests. They recommended, in view oi the importance of the matter and also considering the nature of the reports received, that it was advisable to consider the question as an important policy matter, and that it be referred to the council for decision. On the Library Committee's recommendation the report was adopted and referred to a committee of the whole council for consideration after tho New Year. At Miss Melville's suggestion it was decided that a report on the question be furnished by Mr. J. Barr, director of the Art Gallery.
