REDUCING SALARIES.
THE P. AND T. OFFICERS.
PROTEST FROM TIMARU. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
TIMARU. Monday.
At a large and representative meeting o : the local branch of the Post and Telegraph Officers' Association, the following resolution was unanimously :—" That •while recognising that great pressure is being brought to bear on the Government by fanners' unions and other employers' associations, and against which the Government is apparently powerless, this section is emphatically of the opinion that a reduction of the salaries of civil airvan ts is wholly unwarranted at the present time. The producers were receiving increased prices. for their products for a number of years before, we received any increase in our salaries. We also stress the fact that when the cost of living increased the Government refused to give effect to its verbal understanding with the association to increase salaries accordingly. Civil servants, in common with i the rest of the community, must bear their share of increased taxation, both direct and indirect, and we therefore resent being singled out as fair game for further soecial taxation by having our salaries reduced;"
