EX-SOLDIERS' FUNERALS.
ATTITUDE OF GOVERNMENT. The cost of burying ex-soldiers who have died in- necessitous circumstances i» a matter which has.been causiug some anxiety to the.executive.of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association. The president, Mr. JjS. W. Inder, i yesterday waited upon the executive of theaPatriotio Association with a request that the latter body join in asking the Government to assist with a fixed contribution' 1 in such cases. Jt was stated _by the president of the Patriotic Association, Mr. J. H. Gun&on, that in a number of instances death was due to war disability, but there was difaculty in establishing the fact The result was that the Government would not take any responsibility in the matter, and the association had been assisting the soldiers' organisation with grants toward the cost of funerals. Where war disability was established as the cause of death the Government the cost of. a standard funeral (£ll lOs), After some" discussion the matter raised by Mr. Inder was referred to the Claims ; Board, with power to act.
