PRISONER TRIES TO ESCAPE.
TEN DAYS' BREAD AND WATER. A Swede, Oscar Strangehye, an habitual criminal, came before Mr. J.. W. Poynton, S.M., yesterday at fthe Mount Eden Prison, where he is undergoing sentence, on a flharge of having attempted to escape from the gaol. The evidence showed that accused had been working in the quarry. He went back with hi»i coat and shovel and ran across the road and the railway lino, but was taught and taken back to the gaol. The prisoner pleaded not guilty, and entered into the usual rigmarole about harsh treatment, Veferring to incidents that occurred six months ago. The My of' his conduct was pointed out to accused, who had previously escaped from Wanganui, ana he was sentenced to ten days on bread and water.
