OBITUARY.

MR. S. C, BROWN. An -old and well-known resident of Auckland. Mr. S. C. Brown, died at hii ' residence, Sussex Street, Grey Lynn oa Sunday at the age of 74. Mr. Brown came to Auckland from Sheffield as a young man in the ship Helenslee in 1670 and had resided here ever since. He acquired a milling business in Durham Lane shortly after his arrival in Auckland and he carried it on until the time of his death. Mr. Brown took an active interest in public affairs and he was Mayor of the former borough of Newton for a tens. li< was alwut this time that the necessity for selecting a new name for the borough arose, due to the confusion that existed owing to the district traversed by Karangahape Road being also commonly kiuwt as Newton. Various names were sue- ' gested and eventually Mr Brown's choicti of "Grey Lynn" was adopted and sectioned by the Government. Subsequently ~ Mr. Brown was a member of the Grey '"> Lynn Borough and he also occupied a seat on the Auckland Harbour Board for a time. He had taken a prominent part in the prohibition movement for many 1 years, and for about tun years past had ' been president of the Grey Lynn NoLicense League. Mr. Brown frequently presided oip public meetingß and ne injoyed the reputation of being an excellent cl airman—one of the best, in fact, tilt Auckland has known. He had been in failing health for sormi time. He kva a widow, two sons, two daughters, and . a brother, the last-mentioned being-Mr, Cvrtis Brown, of Thames. Mr.. Brown had one half-sister, Mrs. W. J.'Wild, of Stanley Bay, who died yesterday,..they thw being divided in death by only ow day. ' ■ • , MR. B. COATES. The death is announced of Mr, Ernest Coates, third son of Mr. I. CbaUs,* of Hamilton. The deceased was engaged in surveying in British North Borneo for {lie British Government, and met his death through fever contracted in the'CoW of his work. Mr. Coates went' with v Qii : .:' 2nd contingent to the South African Vis v in 1900, and also served with" the New . Zealand Expeditionary Force in FrancJ during the late war.
