TAKING OF WHITEBAIT.
REGULATIONS ON WAIKATO.
[BY TELEOBAPH.-T-SPEOUL WSPOBTEB.] WELLINGTON. W*daMd*jr. A question which .Mr. J- A. Young (Waikato) put to the Minister for Internal Affairs recently was whether he would amend the regulations governing the taking of whitobait from the Waikato River so as to. permit of the catching of these fish by means of fixed flumes'or triips, fitted with suitable-nets. A note explaining' the question states that at certain seasons of the yisar the Waikato River is traversed by. .millions of ..whitebait, and the present method of catching them with small nets held in the hand is not suitable for such a large river. It has been represented that suitably-constructed flumes or races fitted with nets would enable sufficient whitebait to be caught to establish. an important industry in the distribution of these fish without any detriment to the annual supply available in the river, The. Minister, the, Hon. ; , W/Downie Stewart, replied ..that the. question of appliances fdr taking whitebait.in the Waikato River will be inquired into by ta* chief inspector of fisheries on bin first risit to tb« locniitj. ; '■■'.■ I '':'.■'■. v;-.; y "V . , ■'■'-,■■'■ '. ■■ir, ..'<.•»,.. ■'■:• J
