PARLIAMENTARY SALARIES.
NEW ZEALAND REDUCTION. COMMENT IN FEDERAL HOUSE. The announcement by Mr. Massey that salaries of Ministers and members of Parliament aro to be reduced by 10 per cent, has attracted notice in Australia. Recently Mr. Moses Gabb (South Australia) asked the Prime Minister if he would consider the advisability of following the splendid example set by the Prime Minister of New Zealand in regard to the reduction of the salaries of members of the Government and of the House? The Melbourne Age says that members guffawed heartily, as though the question were altogether too absurd; _ and they settled black with pleased anticipation as the Prime Minister rose, all smiles. "My right honourable colleague, the Prime Minister of New Zealand," remarked Mr. Hughes, beaming at Mr. Gabb, " has had his photograph taken with a flag in his hand ana garbed in evening dress. I shall be glad to follow his example." Mr. Hughes then sat down, while the House rocked again with merriment at his reply. The salaries of the mepibers of the Australian House of Representatives is £1000 a year, btit some of tho members have rt fused to accept the increase, and are taking only £600. 1
