THOSE WHARF SHEDS.
Sir,—Mr. Symons appears to b« guided by the statement of the chairman of the "Harbour Board, that the undesirable and not-wanted sheds are only a temporary expedient, and that eventually all the temporary buildings on the waterfront will be removed to Prince's Wharf. When will that be? The chairman is creating' this nuisance by placing them in a position which the pubhc object to, and I am positive he will not be so foolitK an to ignore the wish of the petition. Tin) sheds could be easily placed on the dock site, to which no one would take exception. Citizen. Sir, —As Sydney and Brisbane are now declared infected ports little argument is required to convince the citizens of Auckland that the stevedores' sheds nonlocated m Quay S'.reet will be a breeding place for rats owing to the nature of what will be stowed in them for nesting. I appreciate Mr Symons' letter as he candidly admits that the board did not meekly give way to his wishes in favour of the reservation of the old dock site as an open space, and he is also in favour of a beautiful waterfront. The question, suggests, itself—who were the agitators for this valuable site, worth from £50.000 or so with roads each side of it and end, to remain idle. When the dock was closed, it was intended to erect warshouses and offices to bring in a larger revenue. I understand part of the sit-a was sola, but when the "eenerous offer ' I of the whole block was made to the Cit v | Council, probably the sale was cancelled Iby mutual consent. Tte front window of I the port should be free from disfigurement, but on the board's "temporary expedient" basis is similar to an up-t<> date residence turning its front verandah into a fowl house. I feel convinced that the "temporary expedient" when the shipping companies object to it. is simply ,f b!uff," as verified with the dock site, which has been idle for about eight years. I assume this is about the time the stevedores' sheds would remain in their present position if allowed, P. VntiTE.
