', •■, ■ » ...... SHOPKEEPERS'. COMMISSION. "OBJECTION TO WITHDRAWAL. [B7 TELECEAPH.— MESS association.] WELLINGTON, S&tnrday. The decision of the Government to w.ithdrafW the; qottcmiission allowed to shopkeepers for the sale of stamps is not welcomed by booksellers. Mr. F. Ejolaa, fiedretary oil the New Zealand Booksellers' stated this froraijng 'that the association has arranged with the Prime Minister for a deput&tipn next "Thursday mornjiTig to ask for a reversal of $he decision. -,'" ' Mr Ross remarks, on -behalf of 'the association, that a commission of 2| per cent, is utterly inadequate as a return for services rendered to the Government. The sale of stamps was an attraction .to customers, and. assisted iho Mile 'of tlie shopkeepers' stock, but the Government was "on a very good wicketj" as shopkeepers all over the Dominion sold stamps, and the Government were saved the necessity of employing, .additional staff at considerable extra cost. v:. The convenience to the public, especially in the suburbs, was very great. Without it people would have ,to go to the nearest post office to ltmy. Mr. Ross/ mentioned that one''Wellington bookseller in a moderate way of business sold about £3000 worth of stamps a year, a'tid he could not be expected to take the risk of carrying this stock without remuneration. Tha old commission waa. too small to cover the risk.
