ORPHANAGE CAMPAIGN.
m APPEAL AT SHOWGROUNDS. SENIOR INMATES ATTEND. A parade of 30 motorcars, conveying over 200 eenior children from the various Protestant orphanages in the Auckland district at the show on Saturday proved a splendid advertisement for the campaign for raising £25,000 for these homes. The children enjoyed the outing, and many of the cars were showered with coins by the crowd around the ring. A considerable amount was collected in this way. The motor-cars were owned by members of the Auckland Automobile Association, who placed them at the disposal of the promoters of the fund. Collectors -were also actively engaged all day taking up subscriptions from visitors to the show, and the amount obtained was considerable. The amount has not yet been, ascertained. LECTURE AT TEE TABERNACLE. WORK OF HOMES DESCRIBED. A very large and successful gathering was held in the Baptißt Tabernacle on Saturday evening on behalf of the fundL Rev." Joseph. W. Kemp presided, and the first part of the meeting was occupied with enjoyable items by children of the Manurewa Home, who had 'been thoroughly trained by the matron, Miss Marks. A lantern lecture by Mr. John Smith followed, and about 60. new slides were thrown on the screen, depicting orphanages of the city and suburbs controlled by the Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian bodies. Views were shown of the exterior of the buildings, the dining rooms, dormitories, play fields, and other features; .also of groups of the children, and the staffs. These proved very interesting. Some of the most effective pictures were those showing the condition of children when admitted to the homes,, and others showing their greatly improved appearance upon quitting the institutions. The benefit* of the care received and the physical &nd moral training were very evident. A solo was rendered by Mrs, J. W. Stewart, and the chorus choir, conducted by Mr. Arthur vvT&on, sang several of their new hymns, Mrs. T. Clark accompanying on the piano. The collection taken up on behalf of the Cituens' Orphans' Homes Fund amounted to, £13$! By special permission of the Mayor tho lantern lecture and entertainment will be be repeated, in the Albert Park next Saturday evening. The chidren will form a procession in motor-cars at the foot of Queen Street, and, led by a band and bearing a banner, will to the park. ■
