Baker has donated a silver cup for competition among the four local cricket teariis. . At the last meeting of the Omokoroa branch of the Farmers' Union reference was made to a large area of idle land held in the distuict, by speculators, which it was stated is retarding progress. The opinion war, freely expressed that nothing short of legislative action would have the desired effect. The discussion was postponed until the next meeting to enablb decisive action being taken. On Saturday a deputation from Waihi waited upon Messrs. H. Southey and J. Torrance, representing the Tauranga Acclimatisation Society, and made a proposal for the- reduction of the Tauranga Society's area from the Qhinemuri County boundary to the vicinity of Katißati. Ag an alternative it was suggested that the Tauranga Society should endorse certain Waihi licenses, "giving holders the privilege of shooting in the Kalikati district, the Tauranga Society to receive a portion of the fees for such licenses. Messrs. Southey and Torrance intimated they would submit the representations to the committee of the Tauranga Society at an early date. The erection of war memorial gates at the main entrance to the Domain is now nearly completed. The opening ceremony has been fixed for December 11. It will bo'of a solemn and impressive ch:.?jctcr. Invitations to be present have been sdnt to the Governor-General, Lord Jellicoo, the Prime Minister, Mr. Massey, Sir Wm. Hemes, Colonel R. C. Allen, the Mayor, and chairmen of local bodies.
