LIQUOR IN A MOTOR.

Friday. ■Acting on information, received, SeniorSergeant O'Qrady, accompanied by Constable' Trask,-' paid a visit last night ■to Union Street, whore he and ' the constable remained in concealment in' the neighbourhood of a residence, the occupier of which was suspected '' of . illicit dealing in liquor. At 9.30 o'clock a" motor-car with the lights out drew up opposite the gate of the residence. . The police stepped out from 'their hiding-place, and as they approached the car the driver -- leapt out, seized a bicycle from the off-sido of the vehicle, and 'pedalled speedily away. The other occupant, Charles A. Dillimore, also alighted before the police reached the car and'set off' at a run. Ho ; was, .however, overtaken by Constable Trask and brought back. -■ * ■■■ i r -a- ..: ■■ A search of the car disclosed the' presence of two sacks of whisky, each of which contained 30 bottles of liquor. Dillimore, when questioned as to the ownership of the car and its contents, gave explanation other than that he had gone for a ride on his bicycle, and had met the car on the Waihi-Paeroa Road, and accepted an invitation to ride back in the car. He attached the i bicycle to the The police waited until midnight for the driver of the car to return, but their vigil was* in vain, as-nobody turned up to claim it. : This morning inquiries were instituted at. Thames, which led to the discovery 'of the owner in the person of Mr .P. ' Manning, taxi proprietor. The information indicated that the motor-car had been r taken out.of Mr. Mannings garage' at 7 o'clock ; last evening, but there is no evidence to show who took it, nor is evidence available as to the identity of tho driver who abandoned, the car in Waihi when the police approached it;''' , -''.^;-'- v , '„•' .' -"'',. . With regard .to the precipitate dispearance of the driver of the car, • tho police are of opinion that the man rode back.' to Thames on Dillimore's bicycle during the night. This morning Dillimore .was arrested on a charge of "aiding and abetting in the offence of converting a motor-car to his own use." He appeared before the Police Court this afternoon, and on the application of Senior-Sergeant 0 Grady, was remanded for eight days in two sureties of £10 each. '. .
