COTTON GOODS MARKET.
ADVANCE IN LONDON, RISE OF TEN PER CENT. INCREASE' IN BUYING. fSI TELEGRAPH,—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHKISTCmTRCH. Thursday. There has been an all-round advance of 10 per cent, in the prices of cotton goods on the London market according to cabled advices received to-day. Information received by cablegram from New York shows advances in many Hnea of denims, drills, and flannelettes, so that the hardness which has developed in the cotton market seems fairly general. Whether the rise will be sustained is a point upon which a number of importers are not at all certain. # Several pointed out that an increase in buying orders has caused the hardness on the overseas markets, but that in the present state of instability it would be unwise to build on the increase in orders being sustained. As far as trade in cotton goods in the Dominion is concerned the period of heavy quittances at large sacrifices seems to be over. An anticipation that there will be an increase in tariff which will appreciate the value of stocks is assisting in the recovery of prices. It is stated that retailers bought fairly freely from city wholesale houses last month, and now business is quiet.
