DENIAL BY THE POLICE, The petition which is in circulation' urging that the sentence of death massed upon Hakaraia Te Kahu for mnrderi ? Patrick Richard Elliot at Ongaro'io should be commuted was referred to the inspector of police at Hamilton yesterday. Questioned regarding the accuracy " c f the sentence: " Your petitioners are of opinion and venlv believe that after the last trial Hakaraia Te Kahu informed the police that he shot Patrick Richard Elii 0 fc accidentally," the inspector said ths.t Se knew nothing of such a statement been made, and his first intimation of it was when he read it in the Heeald.
