WASHINGTON CONFERENCE.

THE AUSTRALASIAN VIEW.

LORD NORTHCLIFFE'S PROVISION. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE. Sept. 17. Lord Northcliffe, in an interview, stated that he never said that Mr. W. M. Hughes should go to Washington, as it waa incompatible with the dignity of a Prime Minister to go as an unaccredited Yepresentative, which he would be if he attended, in view of the United States decision that the British overseas nations cannot be specially represented. He intended to see that his pre&s delegation was representative of oversea opinion, and to that end ho had appointed Mr. Franklin Peterson, of tho Melbourne. Argus staff, to go to Washington and advise the editor of the Times on the position of Australia and New Zealand.

Lord Northcliffe has sailed for Tasmania on a brief visit.
