MANGERE RATEPAYERS.

TARRED ROAD SCHEME. A meeting of the Manger© Ratepayers' Association was held on Saturday evening. Mr. J. Montgomerie, who presided, gave a brief review of the events leading tip to the formation of the association, and stated that the association was determined to have efficiency in the administration of the Mangere Riding, more especially in the making and maintenance of the roads. Ho read a report from the deputation that waited on the Manukau County Council to protest against the departure from- the specifications of the Mangere tarred road scheme, and said that the council had given no explanation whatever, and had expressed a determination to go on with the scheme, in spite of the protest. On this point the association was getting legal advice. Mr. Montgomerie criticised the statement of Mr. Bell (chairman of the Matnukau County Council) that the tarred road scheme could still be completed for the money authorised. He said that already, on less than a mile of road, the council had overspent approximately £5000, and asked how it was possible to overtake this deficiency. Mr. House, the" member for the Mangere Riding, who was present, in answer to a question, said that the matter of altering the specifications had never been discussed by the County Council. The Chairman: So that on a matter involving an increased expenditure of £5000, the council have not given the consideration that they would give to the making of a £10 culvert. A motion 'iFas carried leaving future action in the hands of the committee. The matter of a railway siding and a waiting room for ladies at the Mangere station was discussed, and it was resolved to ask Sir Frederick Lang to bring the subject before the Railway Department. Discussion of a recreation ground for the district was postponed, pending a report from th«j committee.
