The lure of the cigarette is still strong with, the patients in the military hospi■il tals, in spite of the efforts of the medical authorities' in. the Defence Department to stop or at least curtail the habit in the : . '• interests of the men's health. The Auek- ' 'land committee of the Red Cross and • Order of St. John has ceased to supply U" cigarettes to ex-soldier patients in hospital b on the advice of the authorities, but apparently the men still manage to get* /. ./them. »' , '-. •' s As a substitute the committee has Men. supplying the men with pipe tobacco, but in a letter from the Rotonia branch, rel/*.- ceived at yesterday's meeting of the committee, it was stated that the men in the r "hospital there were simply exchanging • then' pipe tobacco for cigarettes. \ The meJical staff at the hospital apparently placed no restriction on cigarettes. Mrs. Smith said that she had received a reqteSfc from a medical officer for cigarettes for patients in Auckland. She understood that the men were making cigarettes out of pipe tobacco, which, sho believed, 'rn was worse for them than smoking readyt mad >: cigarettes. - '.ihe chairman, Mr. J. H.
