AUSTRALIAN RAILWAYS.
REPORT, ON UNIFORM GAUGE. £40,000,000 FOR ALTERATIONS. A. and N.Z. ' MELBOURNE, Sept. 15. The.' commission appointed by the Federal Government to report on the railway. gauge problem 'has submitted its report. It recommends the 4ft. BJin, gauge for the Commonwealth, which will involve a cost of £.40,000,000 for alterations to the tracks amd rolling stock.
The commission comprised Messrs. J. J. Garvan (chairman), B'ustat Blake, and F. M. Whyte. Mr. Garvan is a prominent Australian business man,' selected in coriormity with the agreement among the Governments of Australia that the chairman should not bo associated with railway management. Mr. Blake is an English railway engineer, whose experience includes consultative ' work in connection with ' the .railways of India and China, and Mr. Whyte is an American expertThe members of the commission assembled in Melbourne at the beginning of last February.
