Craigie, member for Timaru, in connection with the murder of Constable Dorgan. Mr. informed the Minister that a public subscription was raised for the widow and children, and asked that the Government should ' subsidise the amount obtained. The Minister informed Mr. Craigie that defin.te provision had been made by pension tor widows and children in these cases, the same pension as for the widow of a deceased soldier, namely, £2 per week for the widow, and 10s for each child under 14 years. In Ulis case the total vcouid be £3 10s weekly. Mr. Lee said he had brought Mr. Craigie'a request before tile Cabinet on Saturday, when it was decided to supplement the fund to the extent of £250, the Minister to be satisfied as to the appropriation of the fund. He suggested to Mr. Craigie the advisability of vesting the fund m the Public Trustee, the wtdow to receive the annual proceeds, and on her death the money to go to the surviving children rhe Government recognised £h« pluctv action of the constable m carrying out his duty, and exceedingly regretted hi# death. Constable Dorgan had been rec<»g nised as a very energetio and capable officer.
Mr. Craigie said he hoped the fund would reach £1000. >
