VESSELS REPORTED. The New Zealand Shipping Company ?3 a e! ,7^ d a**™* *hat the Ruahine. which left [Wellington on August 11 with passengers and cargo for London, arrived at Papama on September 2. The Somerset, which left Wellington the same day as the Kuanine. and followed the 3ame route arrived at Panama on September 8. RUAPEHU'S PASSENOERS. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Ruapehu, which ia due here from England on Monday, has 30 saloon and 79 steerage passengers for Auckland, besides passengers for other parts of New J^ealaxd. THE PORT LYTTELTON. The C. and D. steamer Port Lyttelton. which came up from the explosive anchorage on Monday evening, berthed at the Queen's Wharf yesterday morning to discharge tho Auckland portion of her cargo from England. Bhe had an uneventful voyage and experienced fine weather throughout. Four passengers arrived from London by the vessel. They are: Mesdames R. C. Roberts, E. Graham, and Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Campbell.

CUNARD ANNIVERSARY. ' An anniversary of great interest to the shipping world took p'nr-e on July 4 Eighty-oue years ago (July 4. 1840) the Cunard Company, with a fleet of four ships, totalling 4600 tons, established the ftrst regular steam communication between England and America. To-day the Canard Company, with its associated lines, controls a fleet of 109 vessels, built or building, totalling over 1 oon 000 tons and serving the chief ports of the world. It possesses the largest ship in i.ommi!.Mor in tne world, the Berengaria. of 62.000 tons; the ship that holds ail Atlantic speed records, tho Mauretania, of 31.000 tons; and the ship which since her conversion to oil burning has oarried a greater number of passengers than any other ship, the Aquitania, of 46,000 tons. These three vessels are engaged in the Ounard 6«rviice between Southampton, Cherbourg, and New York. The 81 years of Cunard history represent practically the history of steam navigation. The first Cunarder had a tonnage of 1154. and carried 100 passengers and a crew of 38. The latest has a. tonnage of 52,000, and accommodation for 3000 passengers and a crew of nearly 1000. The old wooden paddlewheel Britannia, with the aid of sails, attained a epeed of eight and a-half knots. The steel quadruple screw trrbine Mauretania has averaged over 26 knots between England and America.

THE RIVERINA. The Huddart-Parker steamer Riverina left Sydney for Auckland at 2 p.m. on Monday. She is due here on Friday, and is bringing 158 passengers and 1600 tons of general cargo.

HOME VIA CAPE HORN. The five-masted barque France, sailed from Wellington on Monday for London, via Cape Horn.
