THE CANADIAN IMPORTER.
NOW REPORTED MISSING.
CAPTAIN AND 22 ABOARD. Reut «r. OTTAWA. Aug. 28.
The keenest anxiety continues to be felt regarding the Canadian Importer. Earlier reports state that Captain Bissett and 22 of the crew returned to the waterlogged ship late on Thursday, after being rescued the night before by the Cordova. The latter stood by till Friday, but Captain" Bissett declined a tow or further assistance because the Canadian Winner was expected to reach him on Saturday, and two other steamers on Sunday. The Cordova thereupon resumed her voyage.
The Canadian Winner has arrived on the scene, and started a search which latest reports show has been fruitless. She reports having seen a considerable amount of lumber wreckage, presumably the deck cargo of the Canadian Importer. The agents for the Canadian Importer are still hopeful that she has only drifted from the position where the Cordova left her.
Meantime nothing has been heard of the lifeboat in charge of A. Laird, second officer of the Canadian Importer, with 10 of the crew, which left to seek assistance before the Cordova arrived, on £he scene.
