TROTTING.
NOTES BY PICADOR. Though the defeat of the motion at the recent Trotting Conference substituting yards for seconds in handicapping was. entirely due to Southern influence, there are places in that quarter strongly favouring the firstnamed syate— and the action of tu« Ashturton Trotting Club ;s well in the limelight in chamnioning the new departure winch will in future rule at its meetings It has been argued— and possibly at this stage mute correctly—that the sport has not Buffered as a result oi the go-as-you-please policy allowed by the rules on this handicap question, but a drawing ol the same picture mfiy not always be p.ssibie on such a matter- Experiences in Aui kiand, it may be safely stated, axe unanimously in favour of the yards system, and the optnion may also be stated with a great deal of conh#enco that handicapping by distance is Tery much more likely to claun fresh adherents than the time system. Judging iroru the vote ciit on the Question at tne recent conference, we shall probably have to wait some tune for uniformity in handicapping, but such must come about sooner or later, and maybe Canterburyites will some day be found as strong advocates for distance as they now are of the time system. The North Island Owners and Breeders' Association continues to extend its membership at a good rate, and the number is now in the vicinity ot 100. At the re<cnt annua! meeting Mr. A. Lowe was unanimously reelected mesiden't of the association- Tho following committee has been elected for trie enduing term:-Mersrs. A. Aitcheson, Monk. Robertson. Brophy, Gee, Groat. Julian. MiUen. and Relsey. Consideration of matters connected with the proper facilities for training operations in Auckland has been receiving further attention as. the hand-, of the North Island Uwners and Breeders' Association, and a deputation is to wait on the authorities of the Auckland Trotting Club aj-an early date in regard to the position at Alexandra ParkIt is. quite clear that unless the necessary training facilities are available the local owners will be Blared at a disadvantage in get ing horses ready for soring engagements, and the question is regarded as one of urgency .
