FARMERS' CONFERENCE.
THE AMERICAN TARIFF.
RETALIATION OPPOSED.
[by telegraph—press association.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday. The conference of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was resumed to-day. A motion was passed urging Government assistance to the smaller farmer soldier settlers in the present financial stringency. A remit "that in view of the United States tariff Bill the Government should pass a retaliatory measure against all manufactured articles * imported from America" was defeated. It was resolved to adhere to the principle that taxation through the customs should be for the purpose of 'raising revenue and not for protective purposes. It was resolved that the conference was opposed to the establishment of a State bank, but was of the opinion that some form of co-operative agricultural banking suitable for New Zealand conditions should be instituted as speedily as possible.
