ATTEMPTED ROBBERY.
THIEF AFTER TRAM TAKINGS.
INCIDENT AT EPSOM BARN.
An attempt was made on Monday night to rob the receiver which contains the day's takings at the Epsom tram bam, but though determined it was rendered futile by the position of the receiver in relation to the outer wall.
As .the tramway conductors come off duty they deposit the day's takings in a box in a pigeon-bole or slot of a rotary receiver, which then revolves and protects the money until the clerk unlocks the mechanism next morning. At the conclusion of a busy day the machine may contain several hundred pounds. The would-be burglar evidently'possessed some 1 nowledge of the interior of th e office, for he bored a number of holes with a brace'and bit through the weather boarding of- the wall adjoining the receiver. His efforts'were frustrated, however, by the fact that the machine is some dis-» tance from the outer wall and a stud barred progress. The detectives have the matter in hand.
An attempt was made three years ago to rob the receiver at the Ponsdnby barn by entering from the roof, but the burglars found the top of the machine had been well protected.
