PROFITS ON LEWIS GUNS.
CLAIM TO RECOVER TAX. £3,000,000 INVOLVED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 6.30. p.m.) LONDON. July 25. The King's Bench Court is hearing a claim by the owners of the Lewis gun for the return of £3,000,000 token as excess profits tax. They allege that the price they quoted the Government, £100, was specially low because the Government authorities pointed out that the Lewis Company was Belgian, and therefore not liable to British taxation. '-' The Crown denies that any such promise was made, adding that it has no official power to grant anyone dispensation from British taxation. Colonel Lewis, the inventor, is a retired colonel of the United States army. He gave evidence that the War Office • ordered two guns in 1913, and five in 1 August, 1914. When 4000 Lewis guns were lost in March, 1918, the Birmingham Small Arms Company supplied 8000 within a fortnight. Altogether £13,000,000 was* paid for Lewis guns.
