LOCAL BODIES' WORKS.
CHOICE OF ENGINEERS. TESTING QUALIFICATIONS. fBX TELEGBAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Thursday. A deputation representing the Society of Civil Engineers met the Acting-Prime Minister, Sir Francis Bell, and the Minister for Public Works, Hon. J. G. Coates, to-day, to ask that legislation should be introduced to ensure that local bodies which have to expend public money should be advised by competent engineers. It was not proposed to interfere with the men at present employed by local bodies, but to provide that in future a system of registration should be adopted, "a board on which the Government would be represented, having to satisfy itself as to the qualifications of applicants. It was claimed that such a system would result in wiser expenditure v of public money with a consequent better return to those who provided the funds. The Ministers expressed themselves favourable to the proposal, which would, however, have to come before their colleagues before any decision could be given.
