COUNCIL OF CHURCHES.
SUGGESTED FORMATION.
The question of forming a council of churches in Auckland was discussed by a large number-of ministers and laymen, -of the majority of denominations who met in the Pitt Street Methodist Chnreh on Monday evening. The Rev. C. H. Laws presided. The Rev. C. J. Tocker, in explaining the objects of the mooted council, said that in the housing conditions of the city, which often did -not permit of thtf;iypuEg children having a proper chance in life, chancellor the Christian Church to move and follow the Master - who preached the Gospel to the poor. Proper leadership could be obtained only when the clerical and lay element met on one common ground, and when they were sure of their facts. To stretch out and reach the public conscience; "Which now seemed to be swayed by .materialism, should be tie highest aim of every Christian body of men, and he saw before the new council of churches a bright future in leading to the dawn of a brighter and happier day. The matter was discussed at length, there being some diversity jjf opinion as to methods and , procedure. Eventually - four ministers and four lay- ~ men were appointed to draft a. constitution to be submitted to a meeting to.be held within a month.
