Diminishing, freights and decreasing passenger traffic has resulted in a number of steamers, being laid up in the Dominion Ino Union Company has the Maunganui Monowai, Mokoia, Pateena-. and To Anau lying idle at Port Chalmers, and tho Takapuna, which has been out of commission for some years., at Wellington. The shipowners aro retaining those vessels which are most economical to run. and laying up others which, although perhaps faster, aro more costly and hold less cargo. The paying off of so many steamers has resulted in many seamen, firemen, and stewards being thrown out of work, and there is now no difficulty in manning the vessels now running.
