AMERICAN STRIKE RIOTS.

INCREASE IN VIOLENCE.

ATTACKS ON SHIPPING.

ATTEMPT TO SINK STEAMER-

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright ("Received 5.5 p.ml A. and K.Z. XEW YORK, May 7. The violence due to the shipping strike has increased following the operators' rejection of the suggested compromise regarding the reduction in wages. Several strikers armed with clubs have been arrested at New York. At Philadelphia steamers were forced to anchor in midstream to escape attacking strikers.

At Newport News the Shipping Board's steamer Williamantic was found to have all her seacocks open and 15ft. of water in the holds.

Riots at Baltimore caused Admiral Benson to threaten to remove all the Shipping Board's ships from that port. Fifteen strikers were arrested. The Court enjoined strikers from picketing snips. At New Orleans three members of nonstriking crews were severly injured by strikers.

While the Secretary for Labour, Mr. H. Davis, is strenuously endeavouring to effect a compromise between the shipping owners and the unionists, violence has broken out in New York and Savannah. In a melee, in New York between strikers and non-unionists, several shots were fired and one sailor was wounded. At Savannah strikers fired on Shipping Board officials who were arranging to place strike-breakers on board a steamer, but there were no casualties. The Shipping Board announces that its vessels are clearing for New York with a minimum of delay. The striking engineers, on the other hand, state that 433 ships are tiled up in New \ork. Reports from Alaska state that the territory is in serious straits, due to the lack of supplies, owing to the strike. All businesses have practically been closed.
