PATEA BY-ELECTION.

RETURN OF MR. DIXON.

A FEW VOTES TO COME. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HAWERA. Wednesday. The Patea by-election was held to-day, and resulted in a win for the Government candidate, Mr. Edwin Dixon. With one small return to come and 187 absent voters' permits issued, the result of the poll is as follows : — E. Dixon (G.) .. .. 2615 W. Morrison (O.) . . .. 2335 L. Mcllvride (Labour) , . 546 Majority for Dixon . . 280 The weather was unsettled and heavy rain fell at midday.

The result of the last election, held on December 17 1919, was as follows :—W. D. Powdrell (G.) 3276: W. Morrison (0.) 3021; G. V. Pearce (G.) 144; W. S. Fitzherbert (Lab.) 453; majority for Powdrell, 255.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE.

MR. DIXON'S CAREER.

Mr. Edwin Dixon, the newly elected member for Patea. is the Mayor of Hawera. Mr. Dixon, who is a New Zealander by birth, has been in business at Hawera for the past 26 years. He has been Mayor of the borough for three terms, and has been very successful in his handling of birough affairs. He has taken a keen interest in education, and was for some years a member of the Wanganui Education Board, and subsequently, after the division of the dis tnct, of the New Plymouth Education Board. .He is a member of the Repatriation Board, and has been connected prominently with the Prohibition Party. He was president for three consecutive years of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce, is a member of the Licensing Bench, and has occupied various other local positions.

There have been three other by-elec-tions since the general election in 1919, as follow :—

April 14, 1920 : Bruce (vacated by the resignation of Sir James Allm) :—John Edie (0.), 2421 votes; James Begg (G.), 2297; majoritv for Edie. 124. May 6, 1920".—Stratford (vacated by decision of Election Court) :—R. Masters (0.), 3394 votes; J. B. Hine (G.), 3246; majority for Masters, 148. September 30, 1920.—8 ay of Plenty (vacated by the death of the Hon. W. D. S. Macdonald) :—K. S. Williams (G.), 2381: F. J. Lysnar (Ind. Lib), 1729; majority for Williams, 652..
