THEFT OF A BRIEF BAG. FINE OF £5 IMPOSED. A charge of having stolen a brief bag valued at 10s was made against John Millar in the Police Court on Saturday before Mr. J. W. Poynton," S.M. SeniorSergeant Rawle said the owner had put the bag down in the private bar of an hotel. In a few minutes he missed it. He saw accused and another man leaving the hotel, the latter with the bag. When he tried to gain possession of it the man resisted him. Accused had told this man that ho owned the bag, and his. friend had put a bottle of beer in it. Millar's friend was an innocent party in the incident. Accused said he had" no recollection of the incident. The magistrate imposed a fine of £b, with costs, in default two months' imprisonment. Accused was allowed a month in which to pay. A month's imprisonment was imposed on George Keenan for having used obscene language in Victoria Street and havino resisted arrest. ° A charge of having assaulted a married woman was admitted by Edward Styles. He was remanded for. sentence pending further inquiries. • = On a charge of breaking and eatering premises at Kingsland Samuel Mills and James Henry Young were remanded till March 14. Bail'was allowed.
