While engaged in sorting waste paper | at the Prison Gate Home recently an old : man, John Jtensky, came across a large j number of cheque forms, -which for some | reason the bank had rejected ai.d dis- ! ! carded as waste. Rensky did not view them in the same light, and set off on an I expedition armed with them. After i filling them in—in most cases for £16— j he had no difficulty in cashing four in I Auckland, and from there found his way jto Raglan. After travelling in a mail j coach to Hamilton, he paid his fare with j a £15 cheque, and received £14 2s i change. Subsequently he visited the shop I of a Hamilton jeweller, and after puri chasing watches and other trinkets, left with the change. Finding his work easy.. , he returned to the same jeweller two days later. After making another purchase he was given more change. Then h e went j to Morrinsville, where he offered/One of his £15 cheques to a taxi-driver to take i him to Ta Aroha. The driver was not so trusting as Rensky's other victims, for j he refused to accept the cheque, but said j be would drive Rensky to Te Aroha "if i : paid the correct amount when he got ! there. On arrival at Te Aroha, however, j Rensky said he had no other money, and I the driver was forced to take tTis £15 cheque, promising to post the change if the cheaue was in order. Finally Rensky was arrested at Thames with a number of other cheques in his pocket, when he made a free confession of his guilt. When brought before justices in the Police Oburt Rensky pleaded guDty to four charges, and was remanded to Auckland on another. Detective Sweeney related the incidents of his career, and Renskv was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
