VALUELESS CHEQUES ISSUED. MAORI IMPRISONED FOR YEAR. Three charges of having obtained money by means of valueless cheques and a further charge of stealing a cheque book were admitted by Ngakura Tuaru Pukeroa. aged 25, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. In a statement made in prison accused said he stole the cheque book from a basket at the Papakura railway station last Apr:!. He filled in one of the forms for £6 and obtained cash for it from Joseph Ryan. The following month he obtained £2 by means of another cheque from Dr. James Walls, at Clevedon., Later he obtained two bottles of medicine and 10s in money from the doctor by means of another valueless cheque. ..Accused was sentenced to nine months and three months imprisonment on two charges respectively, the sentences to be cumulative. On the charge of stealing the cheque book and on the last charge of obtaining money by means of a valueless cheque, he was convicted and discharged. ALLEGED THEFT OF SUGAR. Isaac Wootton and Walter Strong, who are charged respectively with the theft and receiving of three sacks of sugar from Bond and Bond, were remanded for & week on bail. A further prosecution was made by the police in connection with the alleged theft of sugar from tho same firm, William David Hugh James, aged 39, being charged with stealing a-quarter ton' valued at £11 17s 6d. Accused was remanded for a week, bail being allowed.
