CHARGE FOR BUTTER BOXES
♦ OBJECTION BY GROCERS. REPLY BY DAIRY COMPANY. The charge for butter boxes of 2s'lod each made by the New Zealand Dairy Company, to grocers,' in to .Iha cost of&the-butter, 2s-ofd per lb-- r has been taken Tip by the Auckland Master Grocers* and -a complaint has been lodged ;,"with the Prices InvestigaMbii"- 'Tribunal. The latter body has -referred the matter to the-Department of Agriculture, which, it is tinderstood, upholds the grocers' contention that tne charge is an unfair one. "" '' The Prime Minister has advised the . Grocers' Association that be has given instructions that the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Company be notified that it is exceeding the price authorised- ; by the Order-in-Council in charging the retailer for butter boxes in addition, to the price charged for the batter. . i The secretary to the Master Grocers' Association, in a letter to the Dairy .Company, stated that complaints were being ; received "from grocers that £he. company contined to charge for butter boxes and I he asked for an immediate assurance that i instructions had been given to have this J practise discontinued, otherwise a coml plaint would be placed before the Board l of Trade with a view to having the grocers protected against the company's action, which the Prime Minister had advised was illegal. The reply received from the manager of the Dairy Company was to the effect that leiial advice had been taken on this matter and the company had been advised that its action was quite legal and in order, and it had no intention of varying its decision. Mr. J. H. Barter, secretary to the Grocers' Association, stated yesterday that I if the Dairy Company was justified in | charging for butter boxes, which hitherto were supplied free, the grocers would be I equally justified in charging for the paper Jin which the butter sold to customers was ■ wrapped. He said there were instances ~ • where the company had refused to supply butter until the boxes were paid for. The matter is now in the hands of the j Department of Agriculture in Wellington.
