■ ♦ — NOT CONTEMPLATED YET.. MR. CHURCHILL'S NEW ROLE. ABILITY AND ORIGINALITY. r By Telecraph—Press Association—Copyright. ] (Received 8.30 p.m.) A ond N.Z. LONDON. Jan. 18 , Commenting on the expected appoint- ' menfc ,>f Mr. Winston Churchill to the , Secretaryship of State for the Colonies, in 1 succession to Lord Milner, the Dailv , Chronicle stales that Mr. Churchill'* ; imagination, enthusiasm, and energy will ( find scope in the colonies and mandated i territories which need development. The t appointment will also afford Mr. Churchill , an opportunity of showing in a practical < manner his interest in aviation as a fresh i basis of communications. The Daily I Chronicle assumes that the Dominions i will be removed from the ken of the i Colonial Office. | The Morning Post, on the other hand. ' comments on the appointment as if the ' * Dominions will be included in Mr. i Churchill's department. It says that Mr. Churchill has a unique opportunity ■ in view of the fully-established place of j " the Dominions as partners with Britain. The Morning Post is not enthusiastic, and deplores Mr. Churchill's " painful habit j of inventing foolish sayings," but admits . his ability, energy, and courage. The Daily Express states that it is not part of the Government's present policy to separate the Dominions from the Colonial Office, though the matter has been discussed, and at some future time the Dominions may be transferred to the Privy Council. The Daily Telegraph pays a tribute to | Mr. Churchill's energy, originality, and ' instinct of statesmanship. Though he has made mistakes, it says, he is not likely to adopt the old-fashioned attitudo of aloofness, and he can be expected to follow in Mr. Joseph Chamberlain's footsteps. The Daily Telegraph adds that the Dominions are disposed to deal only with the Prime Minister, but there will still be sufficient duties for the Secretary of State for the Colonies.
