NEED FOR IMPRISONMENT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday. In sentencing Stanley Peter Hem to a month's imprisonment for assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty, the magistrate, Mr. S. E. McCarthy, said this offence of assaulting the police was growing common, and especially in crowds. " I have come to the conclusion that fines do not assist in putting down the practice," he added.
