Christmas and New Year in i Wellington is usually a dull time as there ? are few events to attract a large crowd. - This year especially there has been a great exodus to Auckland, where there is the 0 double attraction of *an important race 1 meeting and the Davis Cup contest, e To day tho city has been dull. e Traders generallv on the eve of Christ r mas assumed a. pleasant "business a« .. usual expression and said thev were s doing very well, but when the r ? re ot fu ed "J 5 :t wiU moßt probably be , found that the takings were not reallv ■ such as to warrant their optimism As a a matter of fact people are becoming more careful m their spending and there is g every indication that thev will be still r more so after the New Year.
