TELEPHONE TOLL CHARGES.
-o» _ NEW BATES IN OPERATION. An Order-in-Conncil fixing amended rates and charges for the use of the Government telephone toll lines in New Zealand was gazetted last week. Up to 25 miles there is a fiat rate, day and night, of 6d up to three minutes and 2d for each extra minute or fraction of a minute. Between 50 and 75 miles the charges are 9d up to three minutes and 3d for each additional minute from 8 a»m. to 10 p.m., with 6d and 2d respectively from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.; and the scale rises gradually to 12s for three minutes and 4s for each additional minute for a 750 to 800-mile call between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., and 6s and 2s respecively between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. Urgent communications at any time are charged double th» fees between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Thev take precedence of all others. For communications from subscribers speaking from their own telephones, half the schedule rat«* i are cnarged up to 25 miles only
