A sad burning fatality occurred at ' Mapua early on Christmas morning. Two 5 daughters of Mr. Charles Higgs were camping for pleasure in a loft near a s dwelling house. During the night, the j building: caught fire, it is presumed, as 5 the result of crackers which had been ess ploded. The girls had difficulty in escaping, being seriously burned. The elder girl, Eupbemia, aged 15 years. ! died at mid-day on Christmas Day, and j the- younger, Constance, aged 12 years, lies in a precarious condition. There is a bare chance of her recovery. 3 Mr. Higgs came from Te Kuiti. and is s a most popular and respected settler. A 1 gloom has been cast over the whole district.
