MR. COATES AT KOHUKOHU. [BY TELEGKAFH. —OWN* COKBESPOXDEXT.] KOHUKOHU. Tuesday. Tlie Minister for Public Works, Hon. J. G. Coates, with the chief engineer and chief electrical engineer, met. representatives of the Hokianga. County Council, Hokianga, Chamber of Commerce, and Kohukohu Town Board, in the Rawene County Hall last night.. In reply to requests for subsidies for the RangiahuaMangamuka R-oad, and the OmapereTaheke Main Road, the Minister said he could make no promises beyond what wis set down for this year, but if an application was made for a further sum he \vo»'d consider it if funds were available. He promised to have the Rangiahua Bridgc reported upon, also the proposed To Tin Bridge and the stonewall at the Motukaraka, Wharf. In outlining the policy of his department, the Minister said he would not. encourage loans or grants to local bodies unless they had an efficient- staff to carrv out the work. If local bodies were to be assisted they njust have co-operation and co-ordination with the department. The Ministerial party left fcr Kaitaia via Herekino and Broadwood this morning. He received a number of deputations, and in reply laid stress upon the need for concentration upon main lines of railway and the development of new areas. He will inspect the route of tho Waipu railway tomorrow.
