At a meeting of the Piako County Council, the Minister for Public Works advised that he couid not agree to the variation of the subsidy conditions for grants for Eastport. Melliu's, and Wiseman's Roads, pointing out that the subsidies were precisely as applied for by the council. Had the council applied for a £ for £ subsidy the district engineer would not have recommended it. The district engineer wrote, stating that it j was not proposed to take any action at, [present in regard to No. 3 Road, where -■>. floodgate had been washed away. To renew it would cost £250, and there was no immediate need for one. It was decided to notify a s&wmillmg firm that the council does not intend to frame special heavy traffic by-laws, but to tequire a payment of 4d per 100 ft. of timber milled, ft was agreed to remit the rates of a soldier settler, who is at present an inmate of the Waipukurau Hospital. Tie j soldier explained that owing to iil-heaJth ' he had had to give up his farm, and n"-" ! had no resources other than a small penI sion. Eleven local bodies wrote promising i support to the council's protest in regard I to the closing of Te Waikato Sanatorium. 1 Eleven other local bodies intimated that j they proposed to take no action in the i matter. The clerk reported that so far j only about 25 per cent, of the current I year's rates had been paid. Councillors I expressed the opinion that ratepayers j should not expect ro?d improvements if ! the rates were not paid. The position, i will be reviewed at the next meeting. It ; was decided to approve the offer of the I Thames Valley Electric Power Board to \ provide suitable office accommodation for | the council., at a rental of £130 per j annum. j At the 'local school, on " I day, presentations were made to the Misses ; Bond and Foirest. who have resigned j their teaching appointments, in view of | their approaching marriages. ] So far about 20 rinks of bowlers ! have entered for the annual tournament | at Te Aroha„ which opens on New Year's I Day. The entries include some from OneTakapuna, and other suburban clubs. Advice has been received that the AuekJand Waterside Workers' Silver Band will visit Te Aroha on New Year's Eve. and render a number of programmes during the ensuing holiday period. In former years the Auckland City Band has met ! with a srood reception here at New Year ; time. The Waterside'-s' Band intends to | visit Rotorua at Christmas, and corns ltx> Te Aroha afterwards.
